The water village is 28 separate villages built on stilt out in the ocean. 20,000 people live out there. The houses are built over the water and are supported by stilts embedded to the seafloor. The different are named after the arts and crafts that used to be made out in the villages. Despite the governments inducements many Bruneians still prefer to live above the water, rather than on the mainland.
Antonio Pigafetta and Ferdinand Magellan traveled back in 1521 to today’s Brunei and gave the water village an English name: “Venice of the east”.
The houses are painted in many different colors which has later been bleached by the sunshine. The houses still look amazing, and they are surprisingly big. Not only is there houses to live in, but police station, firebrigades, mosques, gas stations and so on.
This, over one thousand year old settlement, is the biggest stiltsettlement on the planet, it is a must see when you visit Brunei.
If you want to know more about the best way to see this amazing village click HERE.
you can catch a local boat out to the village, and then stroll around. If you do so, be careful with your steps, cause some planks are missing and there’s no banisters.
You need to take a boat there, and the best place to pick one up is here:

Most likely the guys will offer you 30minutes for 20B$. This is barginable, and that is exactly what you should do! I got it down to 30 for one hour and that includes a monkeysafari.
PS. This is not laid out for tourists, so expect to see trash (a lot) floating around, and again, step carefully.
