I want to write down this feelings, not because I nesesarly want everyone to read it, but simply just for me.
I’ve been out now, for almost four months, I’ve met a ton of great people, I’ve seen stuff only a handful of my friends has ever seen, I’ve experienced cultures only a few people have been in touch with and simply a lot of really great stuff. I’ll write down a few of the things I’ve done so far for all you new readers and followers. Keep in mind that this is mostly for my sake, a summary of what I remember the most and what I loved and hated. A few clips of my travels so far.
I’ll take you to St. Petersburg first. That was my first stop on this very long journey. St. Petersburg was for me an amazing city, rich of Russian culture and way of life. Extremely well made architecture, a city built with a plan and it’s posh vs poor struggles.
I was extremely excited when I got there, I took my time to deal with the fact that I was actually doing this. It took me a good couple of days to realize it, and I am very happy that I chose to come to Russia on my own, a few days before my journey with Vodka Train started. It gave me the chance to do stuff more freely and in my own pace.
I was walking up and down the strip till my feet were sore, but I never complained because this was what I had worked my ass off to do, to realize and to prove to my self(and others) that I could be strong enough and independent enough to do this.
I had a brilliant start, and I will always remember St. Petersburg as a city I started this travels in. A city so lovely i would actually consider studying there. I felt like I could finally do exactly what I wanted, no hassle, no stress, I was free! Free to do what ever I wanted, that was indeed one of the best feelings I’ve ever felt. Something so nice that I have a really hard time describing it. It’s not something you can’t imagine if you haven’t been through it your self.
After St. Petersburg I took the train through the massive Siberia. The area of the world with the fewest people pr km. The emptiness, the vastness, the untouched grass-fields so wide over the horizon that you could mistake it for being a bright green ocean.
The trip took me to Mongolia. A country so far behind the western countries that it’s scary. This country is built by history and culture so unique that no other country can compare. The biggest empire ever created was based in Mongolia, I’m of course talking about Genghis Kahn’s empire. Not only did this man gather Mongolia to one country, but he concurred the entire discovered world. He made trading routes and laws, he made the world what it is today, and that is something the Mongolians are very proud of. They still preform rituals over a thousand years old, and to see that in action was interesting and it gave me a perspective of how this world was a thousand years ago. Truly an experience I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. I’m so happy that I chose to go to Mongolia, unbelievably cool, inspiring and great country. Hands down for Mongolia.
Further on I went into China. What an amazing country. The culture is so opposite of what I’m used to. It’s strange, weird, unique, outstanding and you really need to spend a lot of time in China to adjust, absorb and learn from their way of life and culture. It’s truly an amazing country.
What I remember the most from China is the food, hostels, the chaotic transportations and the nature. China houses some really fantastic nature so strange that it is truly amazing. Yangshuo is one of them. The movie Avatar got their inspiration from this place when they created the mountains, they even did some of the scenes here. Or you can travel up north and look at the outstandingly good looking mountains.
The hostels in China is really cool. The best standard of hostels I’ve seen so far is in China. They are clean, spacious, very well themed and they got all got very good mingling areas. If you ever need some help they’ll help you out with everything! Doesn’t matter if it’s trains, flights, boats, busses or booking an other hostel. They know everything there is to do and they’ll arrange and set up everything.
China is extremely easy to travel in, and because of the good help you get from all the hostels you should not have a hard time to do anything. I love China, it is by far the coolest place I’ve ever been to. It got so much stuff going on, wild backpacker parties, unreal nature and so many nice people.
From China I went down to Hong Kong for a couple of days, a cool city. I had my backpack on, and only the only way I knew how to get to the hostel was be memory from google street-view from the day before. I walked up and down all the streets until I found the hostel. Walking around for quiet some time with my backpack didn’t bother me at all. I was sweaty and gross but who cares?
To walk around in Hong Kong reminded me of how I felt the first day in St. Petersburg. To be reminded by that feeling just made me even more happy! I felt like I was once again on my own and I was, because I just splitter up with my friend Holly.
After I found the Hostel I went out to see some more of the city. It was still early and I had lots of time to do things, like the cable-car and the Buddha.
I met a german dude, and we went up there together. He just started traveling and he reminded me of my self, when I was in St. Petersburg just a little more than a month earlier. That made me look back on stuff I’d done and I was genuinely happy for him, since he was doing something he had been working very hard to do. I gave him some tips and tricks, and hopefully he wont do the same non-important mistakes I did.
My next stop was Philippines. This is where stuff got shaky. I got a bullet from a police officer after a night out. I didn’t think to much of it and just threw it in my backpack. It’s so many guns and weapons in the philippines, so you kind of don’t really care after a few days. I got to the airport, with the bullet in my big backpack.. sent it trough the scanner and that’s when they showed me the way into a questioning room, I had to bribe my way out. It gave me a proper scare, and that is why I didn’t travel around in the Philippines. I stayed at this perfect paradise island called Boracay. It got one of the best beaches in the world, White Beach.
I met a ton of Americans working in Korea that went on their summer break to the hostel I stayed at. It was huge fun, and I was never bored. Unreal beaches during the days, banging clubs during the night. I did my Padi Open Water license on the island. It was brilliant and a 24 day long stay on this island was perfect. Some of my best days on this travels was on that island. Unreal beaches, another league than Bali, in fact, Bali sucks compared to Boracay. Sorry to all the people I offended by saying that. Even Gili is bad, compared.
I went down to Kota Kinabalu after this heavenly stay at Boracay. On the way I had an extremely stressful trip down there, mostly because I was so scared of the airports after that incident earlier. I got there safely, and boy was I happy when I got there with all my stuff in order.
Borneo was a bit new and intimidating for me, since I spent so much time in the perfect bobble I like to call Boracay. I walked around KK to see the city, and I eventually got on a bus to a place called Semporna. Semporna is crap, even the Lonely Planet say that, so it’s not just me being a pessimist. However, the Semporna Archipelago is very nice. I stayed at this hostel built out on a peer out in the ocean. It was cool, but not a place to put your party hats on. A lot of couples come here to have a romantic vacation, and do some nice diving.
Diving is the keyword to this archipelago. That is the only thing to do. With my budget I only dived a couple of times, but to be fare, that was enough. I didn’t find it very amusing. It was boring to be honest. A lot of the stuff you see down there is very small. When you don’t know what to look for it’s hard to find stuff. There is one place in this group of islands that is totally opposite. It’s called Sipedan. Sipedan is year after year given the price for the best place on the planet to dive. However, because of the huge amounts of people that wants to dive here they limited it. Only 120(!) divers a day. Each dive is half a fortune and you’ll have to book months in advance. Animals to discover on Sipedan is sharks, barracuda, giant turtles and other giant things. That is why this place is so unique, because of the size of the things you’re swimming with.
I saw the famous orangutans in their natural environment, and something even more cool was the Proboscis Monkeys. Really cool to see animals that much alike our self.
My next stop was Kuala Lumpur where I met up with a friend I met in Boracay. We did all the stuff there is to do in KL. The coolest thing about KL isn’t the Petronas Towers or the KL tower.
It is the places outside of the city center. Huge cooperate buildings stand side by side to very old two story buildings. To see the difference between this old city and the newer developments is amazing. A city in process of rebuilding and developing minute by minute. I would strongly suggest everyone that takes a trip to KL to go see the real KL and not the main tourist attractions.
Have you ever heard someone say that perfect doesn’t exist? Well they haven’t been to Singapore. Singapore is as close to perfect as it possibly could be. This city and country is what I categorize as perfect.
I had some troubles in the beginning, and I didn’t have enough time, but boy did I like Singapore. Absolutely fantastic country. Definitely going back!
Indonesia next up, and I’m still here! Jakarta is a total mess, and if you ever plan on traveling Indonesia I think you would get a culture shock so big it will traumatize you. It is actually really bad. Welcome to Indonesia.
Traveling Java was never the plan, but I went to Jakarta to meet up with a girl I met in KL, however, I didn’t meet her after all, so I just caught a flight to Bali.
Very high hopes for Bali. I went to Kuta, which I thought had the nicest beach, turnes out that is the worst beach on Bali, and that’s exactly what it is!
I went from Kuta up to Ubud, such a lovely place. Friendly people and nice places to stay. A lot cheaper than Kuta. If I didn’t want to surf Ubud would be my base, and then I would jump around but always have Ubud as a base.
I am now sitting at a restaurant on Gili, and writing this.. Heading down to the southern part of Bali, it is supposed to be a lot nicer beaches down there and perfect surf conditions. Looking forward to it.
This is pretty much the roundup of my trip so far. There’s a lot of stories and blogposts, so if you want to read up on specific countries you can scroll down to the bottom and open the drop down list and choose. You can also navigate the different pages I got to see what’s what.
Hope you enjoyed my roundup. It certainly got me thinking about what I’ve been doing so far and a lot of memories jumped back into my messy head.
Lots of love :)
